Belarus succumbed by a 5-1 margin to Sweden in their opening match of the tournament despite taking a 33rd minute lead courtesy Sergei Kislyak, whose long-range effort that left home goalkeeper Johan Dahlin helpless. However Sweden responded in style when Rasmus Elm's hot was deflected into the goal by Aleksandr Martynovich.

Thereafter it was all Sweden as FC Groningen striker Marcus Berg struck a hat-trick and Gustav Svensson scored a 89th minute goal to finish the rout. Belarus were left stunned, but will need to recover quickly of they are to make any impact on this tournament.

Meanwhile Serbia put in a resolute performance against five-time winners Italy and held them to a 0-0 draw in their opening game of the tournament. The Serbs showed a lot of character in the first half when Italy were all over them. Skipper Milan Smiljanic put in a sterling performance as he held his side together during the first 45 minutes.

Zoran Tosic had some great chances to put his side ahead, but narrowly missed the target. Nenad Tomovic also had a great chance in the 75th minute, but a desperate save from keeper Andrea Consigli kept Italy in the match and they managed to hang on to claim one point.

Serbia coach Slobodan Krcmarevic will hope for more of the same from his players as he searches for a comprehensive win that can set it up for their final game against hosts Sweden.
