Consecutive defeats to Werder Bremen and Hannover mean that Bayern lie a poor 9^th in the table, five points behind leaders Hamburg. In the midweek Champions League fixture, they drew 1-1 with French champions Olympique Lyon. Bayern were nervous and jittery in the first half, but the return of winger Frank Ribery, making his first start of the new season, seemed to make them look a more dangerous outfit. Against Lyon, they controlled possession and got nine corner kicks compared to the French side’s one. Some poor finishing upfront saw them being denied three full points. Even against Hannover, Bayern had nearly two thirds of the possession, but were unable to convert it into a goal.

The weekend fixture is the third tough one in a row for VFL Bochum, whose last two ones were against Hamburg and Leverkusen. Against Bayer, they were good, having more of the ball, more shots on goal and more corners, but the eventual result was not in their favour. Koller will also have to do without the services of defender Antar Yahia, who was sent off in the 84^th minute against Bayer. Bochum’s main threats will come from Japanese medio Shinji Ono, winger Paul Frier, and striker Stanislav Sestak. Matias Concha is a long term absentee with his knee injury. Rene Renno has a torn ligament, and has been sent to rehab. Bochum tend to concede early, and Koller will definitely ask his defenders to keep it solid at the back.
