Bayern have not made any major signings in the winter market but Louis van Gaal has trimmed his squad by allowing four players to leave the Bavarian giants. The unsettled Luca Toni has left for Roma, while talented midfielder Alexander Baumjohann has rejoined Schalke. Andreas Ottl and Breno have been loaned out to fellow Bundesliga club Nuremberg.

Bayern thrashed Hertha Berlin 5-2 in their last game before the winter break. Goals from Daniel Van Buyten, Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben put Bayern 3-0 ahead at half time. Young Thomas Muller made it 4-0 on the hour mark. Ivica Olic’s fifth for Bayern was sandwiched between two Hertha goals from Gustavo Ramos and Raffael.

This is a big month for Hoffenheim. They are up against the top three of the Bundesliga- Bayern, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke, and how they fare this month could very well determine the fate of their title challenge. Ralf Ragnick’s men are currently seventh in the Bundesliga with 25 points from 17 fixtures.

Hoffenheim suffered a surprise defeat against VfB Stuttgart in their last game of 2009. However their cause was not helped by the swine flu virus that prevented Timo Hildebrand, Marvin Compper and Demba Ba from taking their places on the pitch. Stuttgart took the lead through Ciprian Marica, but Brazilian Maicosuel equalised for Hoffenheim just before half time. However Ralf Ragnick’s side were reduced to ten men when Luis Gustavo Dias was sent off early in the second half, and Stuttgart made their one man advantage count by scoring twice to win 3-1.
