Bayern got off to a winning start in the Champions League as they beat Maccabi Haifa in Israel on Tuesday night. All three goals of the game came in the second half. Belgian defender Daniel Van Buyten gave Bayern the lead on 64 minutes after Maccabi failed to deal with Anatoliy Tymoschuk’s cross. Just as Maccabi were piling on the pressure in search of an equaliser, young Thomas Muller struck twice late in the game to give Bayern a 3-0 win.

Muller had also netted a brace in Bayern’s 5-1 demolition of Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park last weekend. The win took Bayern’s points tally to eight from five games, five behind leaders Hamburger SV.

Newly promoted Nurnberg picked up their first win of the 2009-10 Bundesliga season when they beat Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 at home. Peer Kluge volleyed home Nurnberg’s winner in the sixth minute of the game.

Nurnberg came under tremendous pressure from Gladbach, but soaked it all up, and managed to emerge with a 1-0 win from the Easy-Credit stadium. Nurnberg have five points from as many games, and are currently 13th in the table. Michael Oenning’s side have drawn both their previous away games in the Bundesliga so far, against Eintracht Frankfurt and Stuttgart. Nurnberg last beat Bayern away from home in 1992.
