The last time Bayern beat Manchester United in a quarter final clash was back in 2001 when they went on to lift the trophy by beating Valencia in the final. The German giants are once again favorites to progress to the final but coach Louis van Gaal will be keen to avoid any complacency that played a part in United’s defeat in the last round.

While this is Lyon’s first appearance in the semi final of the competition, there is not much to choose between the two sides who have won two games apiece in the six times they have played each other in the last 10 years.

The last time both the teams met was in the group stage last season with Lyon coming away with a 1-1 draw in Germany before Bayern secured a thrilling 3-2 victory in Lyon. The French club will be hoping to improve on that result and become the first team from France to qualify for the final of Europe’s biggest trophy.
