After last week’s surprising loss to Hertha Berlin, German giants Bayern Munich will not settle for anything less than a win when they host FC Köln at the Allianz Arena this weekend. The defending champions missed an opportunity to go to the top after Hoffenheim drew, and instead are fourth in the league, with fifth placed Bayer Leverkusen just two points behind them. Bayern had plenty of chances in their game against Hertha, but some poor finishing in front of goal cost them dearly. Hertha took their chances, and that proved to be the difference between the two teams. Miroslav Klose scored the only goal of the game for Bayern.

 

 

Klose’s regular striking partner Luca Toni is struggling with an Achilles problem. Should the Italian hitman not recover from his injury, either Landon Donovan or Lukas Podolski could be called in to partner Klose.

FC Köln have drawn their last three games in the Bundesliga, and are currently 11^th in the table with 25 points. They drew 0-0 against Karlsruhe last week. While Köln’s scoring record at home hasn’t been good, they have done better on the road.

 

 

When these two teams met earlier this season, Bayern raced to a 3-0 win with Luca Toni scoring a brace and Lukas Podolski adding a late third goal. Koln’s last victory over Bayern was over a decade ago.

Franz Beckenbauer said that he no longer considered Bayern to be favourites for the title. The league is extremely tight at this stage, and none of the top five teams can afford a slip up.
