The champions of the 2007-08 Bundesliga season take on the runners up as Bayern Munich welcome Werder Bremen to the Allianz Arena this weekend. Both Bayern and Werder took part in the midweek Champions League fixtures, but emerged with different results. Bayern beat Steaua Bucharest but Bremen were unable to find a way past Anorthosis Famagusta at home.

 

 

Bayern Munich had Daniel van Buyten to thank for the win against Steaua, but Van Bommel and co. will know the upcoming game against Werder is very important. Bremen have looked mediocre this season, and while they beat Energie Cottbus last weekend, the draw against Anorthosis would not have helped their confidence. Should Bayern beat their rivals, or even thrash them 4-0 like the way they did last season, Bremen’s chances of mounting a title challenge will receive a severe jolt. Bayern are yet to be beaten in this year’s Bundesliga, having drawn against Hamburg and Dortmund and won against Hertha Berlin and Koln. Luca Toni grabbed a brace against Koln last weekend, and will want to improve upon that performance. We could see Massimo Oddo start in place of Christian Lell in this game. So far Oddo has had to be content with a place on the bench, but Klinsmann could consider a change in personnel.

Werder Bremen started the season with a 2-2 draw against Arminia Bielefeld, and then drew 1-1 with Schalke at home. That was followed by a shock loss to Borussia Monchengladbach. It took them 75 minutes to break Energie Cottbus down, but once Diego gave them the lead, they looked in control and added two more, with Frings and Sanogo the scorers. Those Bremen fans watching live soccer would have been tearing their hair in desperation after watching the fixture against Anorthosis. Claudio Pizarro missed a host of gilt edged chances, and Bremen cannot afford to do that against Bayern.
