The German Bundesliga has gone down to the wire this season, and the winner will be known only after the final round of fixtures is over. Three teams still have a chance to win the trophy- defending champions Bayern Munich, surprise leaders Wolfsburg and Markus Babbel’s Stuttgart. Bayern, who were level on points with Wolfsburg going into last week’s round of fixtures, failed to win at Hoffenheim. Franck Ribery gave Bayern the lead in the 16^th minute, only for Demba Ba to equalise five minutes later. Hoffenheim went ahead thanks to Carlos Eduardo’s goal, but Luca Toni’s strike just before half time levelled the scores.

Bayern need to win against Stuttgart, and hope that Wolfsburg lose to Werder Bremen. Even a draw will suffice for Wolfsburg, as they have a superior goal difference. Should Bayern lose to Stuttgart, they could also end up losing out on Champions League football next season if Hertha Berlin beat Schalke.

Stuttgart are effectively in the same position as Bayern. They have the same number of points as Bayern- 64 from 33 games. Stuttgart have had a great 2009. They have been beaten only once in the league this year, and have won eight of their last nine Bundesliga games.

Stuttgart beat Energie Cottbus 2-0 last week. Former Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger gave them the lead in the first half, and Brazilian striker Cacau made sure of all three points with his second half strike. It has been an amazing turnaround for Stuttgart. When Markus Babbel took over from Armin Veh as coach, Stuttgart were languishing in 14^th place. Now there are hopes that they could repeat their 2007 league win.
