Not many people would have been expecting to see Bayern Munich in eighth place with a third of the season gone, but that is the state that the Bavarian giants find themselves in. They are also on the verge of elimination from the Champions League after losing to Bordeaux in France.

Bayern drew 1-1 with Schalke in their last league game. Daniel van Buyten put Bayern ahead in the 31^st minute, but Schalke drew level through Joel Matip just before half time. Leverkusen have a three point lead at the top of the table, and are the only team in the Bundesliga not to have suffered a single defeat. Even if they get beaten by Bayern, they may still be able to hold on to first place as they have a better goal difference than Werder Bremen.

Leverkusen claimed their seventh win of the season when they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 a fortnight ago. Goals from Stefan Kiebling and Stefan Reinartz put the Werkself 2-0 ahead within the first six minutes. Toni Kroos added the third five minutes later, and Lars Bender finished things off by netting in the 86^th minute of the game.

Bayern’s last trip to the Leverkusen ended in a 4-2 defeat. That was in the German Cup in March 2009.
