Bayern Munich resume the defence of their DFB Pokal title when they face Bayer Leverkusen in the quarterfinals on Wednesday evening. Bayern whipped VfB Stuttgart 5-1 in the third round of the DFB Pokal. A brace from Bastian Schweinsteiger in combination with goals from Franck Ribery, Luca Toni and Ze Roberto saw Bayern stroll to success at the Mercedes Benz Arena.

 

 

In the second round, Bayern had beaten Nuremberg 2-0. A spirited Rot Weiss Erfurt side ran them close in the first round, but Bayern’s quality told by the final whistle as they emerged 4-3 winners. This is the fifth time in the last six years that Bayern have managed to reach the last eight stage of the DFB Pokal.

Bayer Leverkusen beat Energie Cottbus 3-1 in the third round. The goals came from Patrick Helmes, Michal Kadlec and Brazilian Renato Augusto. Bruno Labbadia’s side had beaten Oberhausen and Augsburg in the first and second round respectively.

 

 

Leverkusen lost to Hannover 96 1-0 in their weekend Bundesliga clash. Arnold Bruggink scored the winning goal for Hannover. The result also saw Werkself drop out of the top five in the Bundesliga. This is the first time since 2003 that we are seeing Leverkusen in the last eight of the German Cup.

When these two teams met in the league in November, Bayern ran out 2-0 winners. Leverkusen have lost their last four games at home to Bayern.
