Bayer Leverkusen advanced to the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup thanks to a stunning 5-1 rout of Turkish side Galatasaray. The two sides had played out a goalless draw in the first leg of UEFA Cup live round of 32 at Istanbul and hence there was all to play for in the second leg.

Three goals in the space of 10 minutes at the Bay Arena sealed the fixture in Leverkusen's favor last week.. Goals from Sergej Barbarez, Stefan Kiessling, Karim Haggui and Bernd Schneider allowed the German side to progress through to the round of 16. Galatasaray grabbed a late consolation goal thanks to a penalty conversion from Ahmed Apimah.

Leverkusen will be missing Russian striker Dmitri Bulykin for this tie after he tore his ankle ligaments ahead of the second leg tie against Galatasaray.

Meanwhile Hamburg qualified for the round of 16 by beating Swiss side FC Zurich 3-1. Hamburg beat Zurich 3-1 in the first leg played at Letzigrund Stadium. Goals from David Jarolim, Ivica Olic and Piotr Trochowski enaured that Hamburg went into the second leg with a massive advantage although Alain Rochat pulled one back for Zurich.

In the second leg at Hamburg, the two sides played out a 0-0 draw. Hamburg and Leverkusen are one of the four German sides remaining in the business end of the UEFA Cup.
