Basel have had to beat three clubs to reach this stage of the Europa League. First up were Andorran minnows Santa Coloma, who were duly dispatched 7-1 over both legs. Icelandic side KR proved to be more of a test in the next round, but Basel’s 3-1 win in the second leg saw them progress 5-3 on aggregate.

FK Baku were their opponents in the play-off round, but Basel blasted their way into the group stages by winning 3-1 away in Azerbaijan and 5-1 at home. Basel won their weekend Swiss Super League game against Bellinzona 3-2 thanks to a late penalty from Benjamin Huggel.

Claudio Ranieri made a winning start as Roma manager as his side beat Siena 2-1 on Sunday. It was not a win the Giallorossi deserved, but all what mattered to the fans and the players was the final outcome of the game.

Norwegian full back John Arne Riise scored the winner from a set piece after defender Philippe Mexes had cancelled out Massimo Maccarone’s opener for Siena. Roma have already scored twenty times in the Europa League this season, beating Gent 10-2 and MFK Kosice 10-4 on aggregate in their previous games. Captain Francesco Totti has netted ten of those twenty, and Il Capitano will again hope to come to the party against Basel.
