Barnsley, managed by former Manchester United striker Mark Robins, were beaten 3-2 by Bristol City on Saturday. The Tykes were 2-0 down at half time, but hopes of a comeback were revived when Daniel Bogdanovic scored shortly after the hour mark. However they were reduced to ten men when Ryan Shotton was sent off for a foul on Danny Haynes, and Bristol struck the killing blow minutes a minute later when Marvin Elliott scored. Adam Hammill pulled one back for Barnsley in injury time, but it was too late to be something other than a consolation goal.
Barnsley reached the fourth round by upsetting last season’s semi finalists Burnley in the previous round. Goals from Jon Macken, Anderson da Silva and Hugo Colace allowed the Tykes to book their spot in the fourth round of the competition for the first time in ten years. Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by a determined Liverpool side at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. It was United’s second defeat of the campaign after their early shock loss to Burnley at Turf Moor. Nemanja Vidic also got sent off for the Red Devils, and is therefore ineligible to play in this fixture.
With the trip to Oakwell coming just forty eight hours after the game against Liverpool, Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to field a second string side. The likes of Gabriel Obertan, Zoran Tosic and Federico Macheda are all expected to get a run out against Barnsley. Can Barnsley upset the defending champions at home on Tuesday?
