The defending champions successfully navigated a tricky tie against Deportivo La Coruna to secure a comfortable 3-1 win last weekend. Lionel Messi scored a brace while Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued his impressive form up front by scoring the third late in the game.

The result sees Barca remain five points clear of second placed Real Madrid who play Valencia this weekend. Coach Josep Guardiola will be optimistic of registering a fourth successive victory and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Barcelona will be further boosted by Gabriel Milito’s return to the squad after spending nearly an year out of action with a knee injury.

Meanwhile Espanyol coach Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that his side can repeat last season’s performance at Camp Nou and end their four match losing streak. The Periquitos had secured a shock 2-1 win last season though Pochettino will be happy if his side can come away with at least a point this season.

Espanyol are without a league win in their last six matches and more worryingly for the coach, have failed to hit the back of the net in the last four. Though his side is placed in a relatively comfortable 13th place, Pochettino will be aware that they will have to turn their poor form around sooner rather than later if they are to avoid getting sucked into a relegation battle in the second half of the season.
