Josep Guardiola will be hoping to repeat history when Barcelona kick off their quest to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage by welcoming Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday. Guardiola had won the Champions League as a player with Barcelona will now be looking to emulate Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard to become the sixth manager to win the tournament both as a player and as a coach.

Guardiola, who replaced Rijkaard in the summer, has had a mixed start to his managerial career at Barcelona, beating Wisla Krakow 4-0 in the first leg of their third round qualifier but followed it up with back to back 1-0 defeats to Krakow in the second leg and Numancia in the league.

 

 

Pressure with be high on the 37-year old to deliver not only the league title, but also try to win the Champions League crown which Barca last won in 2006. Barcelona had a decent outing in the tournament last season, going all the way to the semi finals where they lost out to eventual winners Manchester United by an aggregate of 1-0.

Sporting Lisbon on the other hand will be aiming for a place in the knockout stage for the first time in their history. Sporting finished the group stage in third place last season and managed to reach the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup where they were beaten by Rangers.

 

 

With Barcelona favorites to qualify to the next round, Sporting will be fancying their chances of bagging the second place with FC Basel and Shakhtar being the other two teams in the group.
