Barcelona had a very rare slip up last weekend, when they were held to a 2-2 draw away to Real Betis. The Catalans had to dig deep as they found themselves 2-0 down after 25 minutes. They pulled a goal back deep into injury time at the end of the first half with a goal from Samuel Eto’o and the league’s top scorer scored the decisive equaliser in the 84^th minute for his, and his teams, second goal.

Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table has now been cut to “just” ten points as Real Madrid managed to take full advantage of Barca’s slip up. Although not an impossible task for Madrid, Barcelona will still feel the lead is too large to let slip and will see last weekend’s dropped points as just a minor blip on their way to reclaiming the La Liga title.

At the end of the day, Barcelona still have a record for the season that reads nineteen wins, three draws and just one defeat, and their goal difference is way and beyond anything anybody else has mustered so far, with an astonishing seventy goals scored (21 more than the team with the next best goals scored record, Real Madrid, who have 49 to their credit) and only eighteen conceded (only Sevilla come close to that, with 21 conceded).

For their part, Espanyol are having an absolutely wretched season, and after last weekend’s home defeat to Sevilla by 2-0 find themselves rock bottom with just eighteen points to their name. They have only won once away this season and that was way back in their very first away game in September when they won 1-0 at Recreativo. They’ve also drawn five and lost six of the remaining away games. They haven’t won a league game for fourteen games and the last thing they want (derby or not) is a game against local rivals Barcelona.
