The Catalans are out of contention for Champions League, after their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United. The Champions League was the only realistic piece of silverware that Coach Frank Rijkaard could have hoped to bring home this season.

Speculation that his job is on the cutting block have increased once again, but the Dutchman has insisted he will not resign. Last week, Barca slipped to a 2-0 loss to Deportivo at the Riazor Stadium. These losses mean that Barcelona may also lose the chance to gain a direct Champions League spot for the next season.

However the return of Lionel Messi from injury should give the Catalans the impetus they need to win their remaining matches and challenge Villarreal for the second spot.

Valencia have had a dismal season, but they bounced back last week under new coach Salvador Gonzalez Marco `Voro' with a 3-0 win over Osasuna. Goals from David Villa, Juan Mata and Joaquin pulled Los Che above the relegation zone.

Voro has also brought back David Albelda, Miguel Angel Angulo and Santiago Canizares into the side. Ex-coach Koeman had not allowed them to feature in the team since last December. Fernando Morientes and Javier Arizmendi however continue to be sidelined.
