Guus Hiddink's side were unable to take advantage of their numerical superiority in the second half after Germany were reduced to 10 men when Jerome Boateng was sent off with more than 21 minutes remaining on the clock. Though Hiddink will be disappointed not to have qualified directly to next year's competition, he will nevertheless be pleased with his side's performances throughout the campaign with Russia winning seven of their nine matches and losing only to Germany. Russia's place in the play offs were already booked even before this month's international fixtures began and Hiddink will now be looking to utilize the opportunity to test other players against Azerbaijan. Though Azerbaijan had suffered a 2-0 defeat to Russia early in the campaign, coach Berti Vogts will be optimistic of securing at least a draw on Wednesday with Russia already qualifying to the play offs. Roman Pavlyuchenko and Konstantin Zyryanov were on target for the Russians as Azerbaijan slumped to their third defeat in four matches. Azerbaijan has since then managed to register a win in their qualification campaign and Vogts will be hopeful that his side can put up a good performance against the Russians and avoid ending the campaign by dropping down to the foot of the table.
