This also happens to be Austria's first appearance in the finals of a major tournament since the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Austria coach Josef Hickersberger has named a surprisingly young 23-man squad for the event. Experienced players like Markus Weissenberger and Sanel Kuljic find no place in the squad.

The hosts were dealt a further blow when it emerged that goalkeeper Helge Payer would be out of Euro 2008. The 28-year-old keeper was found to have partially blocked veins in his stomach ruling him out of competitive football action for at least six months.

Hickersberger has called up Ramazan Özcan to replace Payer, but it is more likely that the gloves will be donned by either Jurgen Macho or Alex Manninger. Austria have had a sedate preparation for Euro 2008 drawing 1-1 against Nigeria in a friendly.

Croatia are being labeled the dark horses to clinch the Euro trophy. Manager Slaven Bilic is a highly regarded tactician and he will probably be the driving force behind the team's assault for glory.

The 23-man squad named by Bilic includes young talent in the form of Niko Kranjcar and Luka Modric. Both players are expected to make an impact on the tournament. Eduardo Da Silva would have been a great addition to the squad, but his fractured foot means he misses out a chance to enhance his credentials.

Croatia were held to a 1-1 draw by Hungary in a friendly game prior to the Euro 2008.
