Australia’s Olympic soccer team, fondly called the Olyroos, thrashed the then Serbia and Montenegro side 5-1 at the 2004 Olympics in Greece. Braces for John Aloisi and Ahmad Elrich allowed Australia to demolish the Serbians, who missed an early opportunity to equalise when Simon Vukcevic had his penalty saved. Everton’s Tim Cahill was the other scorer for Australia on that occasion.

The two sides also met at the 2008 Olympics, where they settled for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Both the goals came in the second half of the game. Australia opened the scoring through Ruben Zadkovich’s sidefooted effort, while Serbia equalised through a header from Slobodan Rajkovic. Australia also hit the woodwork on another occasion through Billy Celeski.
