Atletico Madrid will be hoping to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Malaga on the opening day of the season when they welcome Racing Santander in their next La Liga match this weekend. Atletico had a worst possible start to the new season as they were completely dominated by Malaga with goals from Nabil Baha, Manuel Torres Caturla and Xavi Torres ensuring a comfortable 3-0 win for the hosts. Coach Abel Resino admitted that his side deserved to lose the match even though they created more chances adding that his players have a lot of work to do if they are to repeat last season's performance and finish once again in the top four of the league table.

Resino added that his side will have to rework its defensive setup with Atletico conceding two of its three goals from set pieces. However while Resino admits that defense is a problem, it has been further weakened following the departure of Johnny Heitinga to Everton on deadline day and with no replacement signed.

Racing Santander too will be going into the match on the back of a drubbing in their first game. Racing lost 4-1 to Getafe. While Racing finished in a comfortable 12th place last season, coach Juan Carlos Mandia will be aware that his side will have to drastically improve on its opening day performance in order to avoid a relegation battle come the end of the season.

Atletico had registered a heavy 4-1 win over Racing in this fixture last season with Diego Forlan scoring a brace while Simao and Sergio Aguero grabbing one each. However Atletico suffered a worse defeat in the return leg with Racing thrashing them 5-1 in April this year.
