Atletico Madrid’s great run of form came to an abrupt end last weekend when they were comprehensively beaten by a very good looking Valencia team. This was no disgrace all the same, seeing as Valencia are sitting pretty in second position in the league table at the moment. This Sunday coming, Atletico are back in the capital to face a mid table Athletic Bilbao team who have only won one game away from home in the league so far this season, and that was their last away game at Real Betis. Atletico travelled to Valencia last week unbeaten in nine league games. The run was bound to come to an end at some stage, and this duly arrived last weekend. The game ended in a 3-1 defeat for Atletico and a consequence of this was the fact that they have fallen from a lofty third position in the league table, down to fifth, while neighbours Real climbed above them (this probably hurt more than anything).

Being at home this weekend will be a different proposition and the team, without any major injury or suspension worries, will look to resume were they left off before the Valencia defeat. Atletico’s last home defeat was in the Madrid derby over three months ago.

Athletic Bilbao managed to scrape a draw at home to Espanyol last weekend – 1-1 the final result. They sit mid table (thirteenth) with twenty points and their away record reads one win, four draws and three defeats – as mentioned above, their only away win of the season coming in their last away game.
