Atletico Madrid managed to record their first win in five games last weekend when they won impressively at Recreativo Huelva by 3-0. Atletico have been on a dreadful run since Christmas; a run which has seen their Champions League aspirations for next season slip away from them. When Atletico travelled to Recreativo last weekend, they did so in the knowledge that they had probably blown their Champions League hopes for next season due to the very poor run of form they had been on the last couple of months. Anything other than a victory would not only have put paid to any slim chance they had of qualification, but could also have thrown them in to the battle at the “wrong” end of the table.

As it happened, they managed a magnificent win that not only gave a solid boost to morale, but also bumped the team up to sixth position in the La Liga table with 35 points. All of a sudden things are looking rosy again in the Atletico garden. For the record, Aguero scored the first goal against Recreativo and Diego Forlan pitched in with a brace. When they face Getafe on Sunday they will have no major injuries to contend with, so will be looking for a second successive victory to really put their season back on track again.

For their part, Getafe come into the game on the back of a 1-1 home draw with Espanyol and a consequence of this is that they are now thirteenth in the league table with 26 points. They have only enjoyed one league win in the last seven and their away form reads two wins, five draws and three defeats from their ten games.
