The numerical advantage proved decisive for Bolton as they took the lead in the next minute with Diouf latching on a poor clearance by the Atletico Madrid defense to smash the ball past a helpless Christian Abbiati.

The win puts Bolton in a strong position to qualify for the next round but manager Gary Megson refuses to relax, terming the Spanish club as favorites. This will be the first time that Bolton will be playing a Spanish club away from home and Megson will be hoping to make the visit a memorable one.

Atletico on the other hand will be confident of overturning the deficit with the Spanish club winning four of their five matches played against English clubs at home. Atletico have won all of their previous seven European matches played at home, scoring 16 goals and conceding just one in the process.
