Striker Gonzalo Higuain has been ruled out for at least three weeks with a foot injury while Rafael van der Vaart is also unavailable for another month after picking up a calf injury in the game against Mallorca last weekend.

Higuain scored the opener in Madrid’s 2-0 win over Mallorca and the Argentine striker will be missed the most by coach Manuel Pellegrini with the 22-year old proving to be the key player for Los Blancos and has scored 11 goals in his last 10 games.

Karim Benzema will be hoping to take full advantage of Higuain’s injury and find his form after being relegated to the bench following a string of below par performances early in the season. Pellegrini will be hopeful that the injuries will not prove to be costly and his side can take advantage of any slip ups by Barcelona with the Catalan giants facing a tough test at home to Sevilla on Saturday.

Meanwhile Bilbao coach Joaquin Caparros will be hoping to avoid another big loss at home to Madrid after suffering a heavy 5-2 defeat in this fixture last season. Los Leones have had a good start to the season and find themselves eighth in the league table with almost half of the season gone.
