The Black Cats had gone 15 games without a victory but have improved to collect seven points from their last three games, scoring eight goals in the process. Sunderland go into the match on the back of a comfortable 3-1 win over Birmingham City with Darren Bent grabbing a brace.

Gabriel Agbonlahor has not yet recovered from his groin injury but is expected to be available for the game on Wednesday while Nigel Reo-Coker is the only major absentee for Villa.
