Villa built on their brilliant 1-0 win over Manchester United with another good performance as they secured a comfortable 2-0 win away to Sunderland on Tuesday. Emile Heskey opened the scoring with a sweetly taken goal midway through the first half before James Milner put the result beyond doubt by scoring the second just past the hour mark. The result sees Villa consolidate their position in the top four of the table and two points clear of fifth placed Tottenham Hotspur. Stephen Warnock has recovered from his neck injury and is expected to start the game against Stoke this weekend.

Meanwhile Stoke City will be hoping that a week’s rest would prove to be an advantage as they look to register their first win in four games. Stoke are one of the two teams who did not play in the midweek and manager Tony Pulis will be hoping that the extra time will prove to be the difference between the two sides.

Stoke were lucky to come away from their game against Wigan Athletic with a point. The Potters twice equalized after going a goal down but that would have proven to be useless had Hugo Rodallega converted from the penalty spot which was saved brilliantly by keeper Thomas Sorensen.

The result sees Stoke remain in 11th position though they could break into the top half of the table should they manage to take full advantage of their game in hand over Sunderland.
