Villa beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in eight years on Monday to record their first win of the new season. Lucas Leiva's own goal put Villa 1-0 ahead on 34 minutes, while defender Curtis Davies headed in the second just before half time. Fernando Torres pulled one back for Liverpool in the second half, but Villa sealed victory when Ashley Young scored from the spot after Steven Gerrard had fouled Nigel Reo Coker.

Young twisted his knee in a challenge with Liverpool's Jamie Carragher and was replaced by Emile Heskey, but should be alright for the second leg. Villa need to overturn a 1-0 deficit to book their spot in the group stages of the competition.

Austrian giants Rapid stunned Aston Villa in the first leg, but they also know that the job is far from done. Bosnian Nikica Jelavic headed home in the first minute of the game from a Christophe Drazan corner, and that remained the difference between the two sides at the final whistle.

Jelavic also scored a brace in Rapid's 4-1 win over LASK Linz in the Austrian Bundesliga on Sunday. Vidas Alunderis' early own goal put Rapid ahead, and Jelavic made it 3-0 with strikes on 17 and 25 minutes. Steffen Hoffman added the fourth on 29 minutes. Linz did pull one back in the second half, but the result of the game was never in doubt.
