Aston Villa beat Blackburn Rovers 7-4 on aggregate to reach the finals. Villa had won the first leg at Ewood Park 1-0 but were pushed onto the backfoot as Rovers took a 2-0 lead in the return leg. However the Midlands club completed a fine comeback to emerge 6-4 winners. All six of their goals at Villa Park came from the boots of six different players.

United had lost the first leg of their semifinal to bitter rivals Manchester City. The second leg at Old Trafford did not produce any goals till half time and it looked like City would reach their first League Cup final since 1981. The Red Devils however managed to score thrice in the second half, including an injury time header from Wayne Rooney as they dumped Roberto Mancini’s side out of the competition.
