Bulgarian side PFC Litex Lovech face an uphill task when they visit Villa Park for the second leg of their first round UEFA Cup tie on Thursday night. Litex lost by three goals to one in the first leg, and we should see Martin O’ Neill’s side achieve the desired result to progress to the next stage. Litex battled hard, but were undone by some poor defensive mistakes in the first leg. They took the lead through Ivelin Popov, who has attracted attention from Sunderland and Blackburn, before Uros Golubovic’s poor clearance saw Nigel Reo Coker equalise. Mihail Venkov’s handball allowed Gareth Barry to score on his 400^th appearance for Villa, and Stilian Petrov added a late third to effectively destroy the home side’s hopes. Apart from Venkov, Litex also had Cedric Cambon sent off for two bookings in a matter of just three minutes. Both will be suspended for the trip to Villa Park. Litex also lost their most recent league game to Levski Sofia, with Darko Tasevski grabbing a brace as Sofia won 2-0.

The scoreline in the first leg flattened Aston Villa, for the Villains were nowhere as convincing as the 3-1 suggested. They were sluggish at the start, and had Litex Lovech been a more disciplined side, Villa could have lost the game. However, the win was a win, and Villa find themselves in pole position ahead of the second leg. They are currently third in the Premiership, and they beat Sunderland 2-1 at the weekend to register their third successive Premier League victory. Villa lost to QPR in the Carling Cup though, with Damien Stewart scoring for the Hoops.
