Injury hit Villa reached the finals by beating fancied FC Porto 2-1 in the semis. Emile Heskey opened the scoring on 15 minutes, and former Chelsea midfielder Steven Sidwell doubled Villa's lead seven minutes before half time. Porto scored a late consolation goal through Hulk after Nigel Reo Coker had given away a penalty in the dying minutes of the game.

However Villa, already missing Stiliyan Petrov and Luke Young, will also be without the services of Heskey for the final after he was sent off by Greek referee Michael Koukoulakis for pushing away Porto defender Maicon. Curtis Davies was taken off the pitch for a suspected shoulder injury, but the defender should be all right for the final.

Juventus beat star studded Real Madrid 2-1 to record their third straight win in the tournament. Former Real defender Fabio Cannavaro headed Juve ahead from Alessandro Del Piero's third minute free kick. Real equalised through Cristiano Ronaldo on 42 minutes after Giorgio Chiellini had clumsily brought down Raul in the box.

Real's problems with defending set pieces were again cruelly exposed after the break. Alessandro Del Piero whipped in a corner, and Hasan Salihamidzic rose to score what would eventually be the winner. It was the fifth goal Real had conceded in the tournament.
