Aston Villa beat Litex Lovech 4-2 on aggregate in the previous round to seal their spot in the group stages. In their weekend Premiership fixture, they drew 0-0 with Portsmouth, a team who will also play in Europe on Thursday , against Portuguese side Braga. Villa had plenty of chances to win the game, but the goalless stalemate was overshadowed by an incident that saw assistant referee Phil Sharp get hit on the head by a 50p coin. In the game, O’Neill made two changes to his regular starting XI- he gave Carlos Cuellar and James Milner starts ahead of Luke Young and Nicky Shorey.

 

 

While Villa were unable to get three points against a resolute Pompey, Ajax had no such issues as they beat FC Groningen 1-0 thanks to a goal from former Barcelona fullback Oleguer. The Dutch giants  beat Borac Cacak 6-1 on aggregate to reach the group stages of this competition. One thing that will worry Ajax fans is their poor away form this season. They lost to Willem II, drew with Feyenoord and were thrashed 5-2 by Heerenveen. With both Maarten Stekelenburg and Dennis Gentenaar out injured, Kenneth Vermeer has had to don the goalkeeping gloves. Luis Suarez scored in both legs against Borac, and he along with Klaas Jan Huntelaar, will be the main threat upfront for Marco Van Basten’s side.
