Arsenal were comprehensively beaten by Manchester United in the second leg of the semifinal on Tuesday by a 3-1 margin. The Gunners' dreams of a trophy were shattered within 10 minutes when Ji-Sung Park and Ronaldo scored for the visitors.

Prior to this, Arsenal had prepared for the tie in a decent manner with a 3-0 win over Portsmouth in the Premier League thanks to a brace from Nicklas Bendtner and another goal from Carlos Vela.

The win took Arsenal to 68 points from 35 games and all, but ensured they will qualify for next season's champions league. Manager Arsene Wenger will hope that his side can challenge Chelsea for the third spot by winning all their remaining games this season.

Chelsea were desperately unlucky on Wednesday as a series of blunders by the referee meant that the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge allowed Barcelona to go through to the final in Rome against Manchester United.

Last week they had beaten Fulham 3-1 thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka, Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba. Eric Nevland had scored Fulham's lone goal. The win kept Guus Hiddink's men in the hunt for a tight finish which could see them claim the second spot as well.
