The Gunners were successful in preventing their third straight loss in the league as they crushed Wigan Athletic 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen gave them the lead by heading in Robin Van Persie’s corner. Shortly after the break, Vermaelen grabbed his second by curling the ball past Chris Kirkland after a nice one-two with Emmanuel Eboue.
Brazilian Eduardo added a third before the hour mark, and captain Cesc Fabregas completed the rout by back-heeling Nicklas Bendtner’s cross from close range. Last season, Arsenal reached the fifth round of the competition before losing to Burnley at Turf Moor.
West Brom routed Middlesbrough 5-0 in a top of the table clash in the Championship on Saturday. Former Boro trainee Chris Brunt netted a brace as Gareth Southgate’s men were crushed at the Riverside.
Youssouf Mulumbu, Roman Bednar and Jerome Thomas were the other scorers for the Baggies, who are yet to lose a game in the Championship this season. West Brom needed a late goal from Simon Cox to beat Rotherham United in the second round. WBA took the lead twice, only to go down 3-2 in extra tie before strikes from Craig Beattie and Cox gave them a win in a seven goal thriller at the Hawthorns.
Wenger is likely to give some of his youngsters a start in this game, just as he did last year. Arsenal have a good record against West Brom at home, but the in form Baggies will not be easy to defeat. Sign up today and watch Arsenal vs West Bromwich Albion live as it happens.
