Angola qualified as the top team in Group A after their victory over Malawi and two draws against Mali and Algeria. The hosts were involved in a thriller in the opening game when they let go of a 4-0 lead to draw 4-4 against Mali. However they bounced back in their next game to defeat Malawi by a 2-0 margin and a simple 0-0 draw against Algeria in their final group game was enough to see them through.

Meanwhile Ghana advanced to the quarterfinals in style after beating Burkina Faso 0-1. The Black Stars lost their first match 3-1 to Ivory Coast, but bounced back against Burkina thanks to a lone goal from Andre Ayew. The task for Ghana was made easier after defender Mamadou Tall was sent off in the 66th minute and they sat on their lead to set up a clash against Angola.

Manager Milovan Rajevac will continue to be without talismanic skipper Michael Essien, who is facing a fresh injury crisis in the form of a knee issue immediately after recovering from a hamstring problem.
