England kick off their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign with a trip to Andorra with all eyes on next week's match against Croatia that could prove whether Fabio Capello was the right man to take over the national post after Steve McClaren was sacked. Fabio Capello has sprung some surprises as he named the squad for his first two competitive fixtures as the England manager. Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is a shock absentee from the 23-man squad with Capello stating that he has left out the striker solely on fitness grounds.

 

 

Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard received a shock call up to the national squad and could be in line to make his debut for England with Steven Gerrard joining the injury list along with Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick.

There have been no changes to the strike force that was selected for the friendly against Czech Republic with Jermain Defoe expected to start with Wayne Rooney should Capello opt for a 4-4-2 formation rather than the 4-4-3 formation that had got him much criticism against the Czech.

 

 

David Beckham and Wes Brown have retained their places in the squad to face Andorra with Brown expected to start at the right back with both Micah Richards and Gary Neville still short of full fitness. Robert Green, Joleon Lescott and Theo Walcott have also been selected in the squad that takes on Croatia four days later.
