Anderlecht and Bayern Munich have faced off in European club competitions eight times before this with Bayern holing the upper hand in these encounters. The German team has won four encounters, while the Belgian side has emerged victorious on two occasions. the remaining two clashes ended in draws.

Anderlecht qualified for live UEFA Cup round of 16 by beating Bordeaux in the round of 32 with an aggregate score of 3-2. In the first leg played at Brussels, Anderlecht emerged 2-1 winners thanks to a late goal from Mbo Mpenza. This was after Jussie's goal was nullified by Jan Polak.

In the second leg of the UEFA Cup round of 32 at Bordeaux, Chatelle put Anderlecht ahead, but Cavenaghi equalized for Bordeaux. However the home side was unable to find a second goal that would have allowed them to go into extra time.

Meanwhile Bayern Munich qualified for the round of 16 by trashing Aberdeen 7-3. Bayern emerged victorious after they were held to a 2--2 draw at Aberdeen, but managed to win 5-1 at home. Goals from Lucio, Daniel Van Buyten, Lukas Podolski and Mark van Bommel ensured that Lovell's 83rd minute strike was a mere consolation for Aberdeen.

Bayern coach Omar Hitzfield would have been delighted with his side's performance and will expect them to progress further in this competition and hope to end his career at Munich on a high note with European silverware.
