Atletico Madrid’s great run of recent months has well and truly come to an end, with two league defeats in a row; the last one a home loss to Athletic Bilbao which came last weekend. Atletico Madrid suffered another damaging defeat in their quest to secure a qualification spot for next season’s Champions League, when they lost at home to Bilbao by 3-2. This was the second defeat in a row, following hard on the heels of the defeat to Valencia a fortnight ago. Consequently, they now share fifth position in the La Liga table with two other teams – Villarreal and Deportivo La Coruna – on thirty points each, Atletico just shading it on goal difference.

They head to Almeria on Sunday knowing that they have to win to get their stuttering campaign back on track or there will be no repeat of this season’s great, and as yet unfinished, run in the Champions League. There are no real injury or suspension problems to deal with, so the coach has the luxury of choosing from a more or less full squad.

Almeria come into the match on the back of a good 2-2 away draw to Espanyol and are now in fourteenth position in the league table with twenty points, five clear of the relegation zone - although there is still obviously plenty of football to play between now and the end of the season.
