The two countries were tied in terms of points and goal difference in Group three of the African qualifying rounds, forcing FIFA to schedule a one-off game with winner takes all stakes. Egypt forced this playoff after beating Algeria 2-0 in their final group game.

Amr Zaki had given Egypt the lead just 4 minutes into the game, but a dramatic winner five minutes into stoppage time by Emad Moteab gave Egypt the right to play Algeria in a playoff.

The game was marred by controversy with three Algerian players sustaining minor injuries when youths stoned their team bus prior to the game. FIFA decided to allow Egypt to go ahead with the game after receiving security assurances.

Algeria midfielder Khaled Lemmouchia was incensed that the game was allowed to go on and said the best thing would have been to postpone it. Lemmouchia played with three stitches in his scalp and said FIFA was not right to get on with the game.

However the teams now get ready for a tilt at the summit to clinch the last of Africa's qualifying berths for South Africa 2010. Egypt start off as favorites, but Algeria will be keen to prove a point here and will hope the neutral venue will help them clinch a win.
