Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam host Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava at the Amsterdam Arena this Thursday in a battle to earn an automatic spot in the group stages of the newly formed Europa League. Ajax finished third in the Eredivisie last season, and narrowly lost out on a Champions League spot to Steve McClaren managed Twente Enschede. Marco Van Basten has been replaced as Ajax manager by Martin Jol, who managed HSV in the Bundesliga last season.

Ajax lost a thrilling weekend domestic game 4-3 to bitter rivals PSV Eindhoven. They beat Bosnian side Zrinjski 4-1 on aggregate in the second qualifying round, but the Belasi could not overcome the might of Greek powerhouse Olympiacos in the third qualifying round. Olympiacos won 2-0 in both legs.

Dusan Uhrin's men are currently second in the 2009-10 edition of the Slovak Superliga, a point behind leaders Nitra. They do have a game in hand though. Slovan's last game was a 1-1 draw with Artmedia Petrzalka. Andrej Hodek gave the visitors the lead in the 33^rd minute, but Juraj Halenar equalised for Slovan twelve minutes later.
