The Blues were victorious against Championship outfit Crystal Palace last Saturday. Ghana midfielder Michael Essien scored the only goal of the game just before the hour mark after Josh McEachran and Daniel Sturridge had combined to set him up.

New signing Yossi Benayoun and Russian star Yuri Zhirkov both did not feature against Palace due to injury, but could play some part against Ajax. Against Palace, Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti played a 4-1-2-1-2, with McEachran starting behind frontmen Sturridge and Franco Di Santo.

Ajax’s last friendly was against Romanian outfit Rapid Bucharest. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Siem de Jong scoring Ajax’s only goal of the game. Ajax had previously defeated Ajax Amateurs and Egyptian giants Al Ahly in friendlies prior to the game against Rapid.
