Ajax started off well against Atletico as captain Luis Suarez and his strike partner Dario Cvitanich combined to give them an early lead. Atletico hit back through strikes from Simao and Sergio Aguero, but Ajax equalised in the second half through a rare header from Dennis Rommedahl.

Atletico scored another through Maxi Rodriguez, but there was still a twist in the tale. In the final minute of the game, Rommedahl went down in the Atletico box, and Suarez converted from the spot to leave Atletico stunned and send the home fans into delirium. Both Ajax and Atletico Madrid took four points from the fixture- a point for the draw, and three points for the goals both teams scored.

 

 

Portuguese giants Benfica raced to the top of the table with a fluent 2-0 win over Sunderland in the opening fixture of the tournament. Paraguayan striker Oscar Cardozo scored from 12 yards to give Benfica the lead after Javier Saviola had been brought down by Sunderland skipper Danny Collins.

Uruguayan wingback Maximilano Pereira made sure of all three points ten minutes into the second half. Benfica took five points from the game- three for their win, and one for each goal they scored. Given the way they played against the Black Cats, O Glorioso must now be considered favourites to lift the tournament.
