Ajax, four time winners of the tournament, last managed to get their hands on the trophy way back in 2004. They also finished a disappointing third in the Eredivisie last season, behind champions AZ Alkmaar and FC Twente. Fans will be hoping that things change for the better under new coach Martin Jol. The Dutchman's first game in charge of Ajax saw them whip DWV Amsterdam 10-1. They then followed it up with comfortable wins over Ajax Cape Town, WKE, HZW and SV Huizen.

In their two most recent fixtures, they thrashed Bristol City 4-0, and then crushed Southampton 4-1 to win the Ted Bates trophy. New captain Luis Suarez, Urby Emanuelson, Albert Luque and Dennis Rommedahl were the scorers in the win against Bristol City. Suarez also netted a brace against Southampton, with Siem de Jong and Marvin Zeegelaar scoring the other two.

Atletico beat fifth tier Colmenar Viejo 3-0 in their first pre season friendly. Cleber Santana, Alvaro Dominguez and German Pacheco were on the scoresheet for Los Colchoneros. Jose Manuel Jurado had an oustanding game in midfield, and Atletico coach Abel Resino would certainly have taken note of that.

Former Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes also put in a confident show against Colmenar. Atletico finished fourth in Spain last season. With the likes of Diego Forlan, Sergio Aguero, Simao and Maxi Rodriguez in their side, one would expect Atletico to have another successful domestic season in 2009.
