AaB Aalborg welcome Spanish giants Villarreal to the Aalborg Stadium on Wednesday hoping to improve on their thrilling performance on Matchday 3. Watch all the live Champions League action here on Live Sport Network.

 

 

The Danish club was involved in a nine-goal thriller against Villarreal on Matchday 3 ultimately losing 6-3 in a gripping contest. Marek Saganowski, Thomas Enevoldsen and Andreas Johansson gave AaB hope in Spain as they first took the lead, then squared the game and finally grabbed a consolation.

However Villarreal proved too strong for the Danish side as Giuseppe Rossi, Joan Capdevila and a Joseba Llorente hat-trick put them ahead in front of a rapturous crowd. Robert Pires grabbed a cushion late on to give them a 6-3 win.

 

 

However that loss ended Bruce Rioch's reign as coach of AaB. Rioch had been appointed as a temporary replacement for Erik Hamren and despite guiding the club past FK Modrica and FBK Kaunas into the Champions League group stages, he was given his marching orders.

The Danish champions are also struggling in domestic competition and this may have prompted the club to end its association with Rioch. AaB assistant coach Allan Kuhn is in temporary charge of the club till the New Year after which a permanent appointment will be made, the club has said.

 

 

Meanwhile Villarreal are second in Group F after drawing 0-0 against Manchester United and then overcoming Celtic 1-0 before that memorable match against AaB at the El Madrigal Stadium.

Manuel Pellegrini's side may be able to confirm their spot in the next stages of the competition with a simple win here.
