Carlo Ancelotti’s AC Milan host FC Zurich on Thursday in their first UEFA Cup fixture of the 2008-09 season. Milan, seven time winners of the Champions League, missed out on the more lucrative competition after finishing fifth in last season’s tightly contested Serie A.

 

 

Milan have not been in the best of form, and lost their Serie A opener to Bologna. Andriy Shevchenko has returned to his former club, and was on target for Ukraine in the recent international break. Milan also signed Mathieu Flamini and Philippe Senderos ( loan) from Arsenal and Ronaldinho and Gianluca Zambrotta from Barcelona in the summer transfer window. FIFA World Player of the Year Kaka has recovered from the injury in his left knee, and played against Genoa in the weekend Serie A fixture, where they struggled to break down their opponents and fell 0-1 down after Giuseppe Sculli gave the hosts the lead. Andrea Pirlo is a wonderful exponent of the dead ball, will marshall Milan’s midfield. A broken wrist has put Gennaro Gattuso out of action, and the battling midfielder will be missed.

FC Zurich finished third in the 2007-08 Swiss Super League. Last year, they progressed to the round of 32 in the UEFA Cup, beating Sparta Prague and Toulouse FC in the group stages before being eliminated by Germany’s Hamburger SV. One player Milan will have to watch out for is Tunisian Yassine Chikhaoui, Etoile Du Sahel’s youngest club captain. Zurich are second in the Swiss League currently, with Basel taking a comfortable lead at the top.
