Aktobe, the 2008-09 Kazakhstan Premier League winners, ended up in the playoff rounds of the Europa League after being eliminated by Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League. Aktobe beat Icelandic side Hafnafjordur 6-0 on aggregate in the second round, and came mighty close to upsetting Maccabi. They raced to a 3-0 lead in the first fifteen minutes in Haifa, but eventually crumbled under pressure and lost the game 4-3.

Aktobe are two points behind Lokomotiv Astana in the Kazakshtan Premier League, but they do have two games in hand. They were upset 1-0 by FC Atyrau in their weekend league game. A key player for Aktobe is Murat Tleshev, who currently leads the goal scoring charts with 12 goals back home.
