Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf has some new blood to work with over the coming season. The capture of 20-year old German international Marko Marin from Borussia Monchengladbach is a major plus for Schaaf as is the return after a year away of Tim Borowski who had a disappointing time at Bayern Munich. He didn’t feature in the plans of new Allianz Arena coach Louis van Gaal but is a welcome addition to the Bremen squad.

Schaaf’s decade-long tenure may be extended irrespective of success this season with the club keen to tie their man down to a further contract extension. His stock has risen further since the permanent re-signing of striker Claudio Pizarro, the 30-year old Peruvian who spent last year on loan at Bremen from Chelsea. With Brazilian defender Naldo committing his future to the Weserstadion, the potential for the team to progress in the Bundesliga and in the Europa League for which they qualified through their German Cup win looks high.

Werder Bremen was founded in 1899 by a group of school children. From their early days, Werder always entertained and they were the first team able to charge people to watch them play. They were also the first club to hire a manager or head coach. A founder member of the Bundesliga, they set the original standards that all German clubs have subsequently sought to follow.

Werder Bremen has won four domestic championships and six German Cups in total with their golden era during the mid-80s to early-90s. More recently, whilst only winning one title, they have been one of the highest scoring teams in the league year-in and year-out and have continued to be entertaining to watch and won the DFB Cup in 2008/9.

Werder Bremen play in the Weserstadion with a little over forty thousand capacity. Opened in 1924, it has been Werder’s home ever since and provides one of the best atmospheres in the entire Bundesliga.
