2010/11

PSV eventually finished third in last season’s Eredivisie after leading for long spells of the early part of the season. In an exciting three-horse race they eventually fell away to finish seven points behind second-placed Ajax and eight points behind champions FC Twente from Enschede, who were managed by former England supreme Steve McClaren.

McClaren’s departure to Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg means that the Eredivisie title is wide open again this season. And coach Fred Rutten will be hoping that PSV can continue their gradual improvement on two seasons ago and get back to the title-winning prowess displayed by Guus Hiidink’s and Ronald Koeman’s four-in-a-row side of 2004 to 2008.

Key to PSV’s success will be the form of star Dutch international midfielder Ibrahim Afellay, who attracted suitors after the World Cup but has remained in Eindhoven. Rutten has signed Brazilian centre-back Marcelo from Poland’s Wisla Krakow to add to the rearguard which was the team’s strength last season. And 22-year-old striker Jeremain Lens, who has played internationally for both the Netherlands and his native Surinam, will add to PSV’s attacking options.

A Brief History

PSV was formed on August 31, 1913 at the end of a party thrown to mark the 100th anniversary of Holland's independence. Nicknamed '' Boeren " ( Dutch for farmers), PSV have been one of the most successful clubs in Holland. They have 20 Eredivisie titles to their name, and can also boast of success at continental level, having won the Champions League in 1987-88 and the UEFA Cup a decade before that.

PSV's first Dutch Eredivisie title came in 1929, fifteen years after they started competing as a club, with a second five years later. The first of their eight Dutch Cup victories came in 1950, when they beat Haarlem 4-3. In the 1956-57 season, striker Coen Dillen scored 43 goals in the season, a record which has never come close to being broken so far.

The 1970's saw PSV dominate Dutch football under Kees Rijvers. They had players like Willy van der Kuijlen, Rene van de Kerkhof, Willy van de Kerkhof and Jan Poortvliet in their ranks. They won the UEFA Cup in 1978, beating French club Bastia 3-0 in a two legged final. The club contributed several players to the Dutch squad that finished second in the 1978 World Cup, including defender Ernie Brandts who remains the only player to score a goal and an own goal in the same World Cup match.

The club had to wait for the arrival of Guus Hiddink to achieve European glory again. They beat Benfica 6-5 on penalties in the 1988 European Cup final in Stuttgart. In the same year, a little known Brazilian called Romario arrived from Vasco Da Gama. He dominated the goal scoring charts for the next three seasons, and scored an incredible 101 goals in 107 appearances for PSV.

Romario’s compatriot, and national team successor, Ronaldo also dominated the scoring charts in his brief mid-nineties spell at the Eindhoven club, averaging a goal in every game during the 1994/95 season, which helped him secure a move to Barcelona, where he repeated his goals-per-game ratio.

After a couple of trophy-less seasons, PSV Eindhoven hired Dick Advocaat as manager. With Jaap Stam, Philip Cocu and Boudewijn Zenden, PSV were crowned Dutch champions in the 1996-97 season but after a successful 1998 World Cup campaign, many internationals left. PSV next won the Eredivisie in 2002/3. With Hiddink leaving in 2006, Ronald Koeman took over as coach. And PSV were champions twice more under Koeman’s tutelage. However, they have failed to even qualify for the UEFA Champions League in the last two seasons, something which would have been unthinkable throughout this most successful decade.
