Claude Puel remains in charge and has added to his squad in the summer. Senegalese defender Papa Diakhate has joined on loan from Dinamo Kiev and Jimmy Briand has arrived from Rennes to strengthen the forward line. The biggest capture was that of Bordeaux midfielder Yoann Gourcuff for €22M. The 24-year old is widely recognised one of the brightest stars in the French game. Mathieu Bodmer has joined PSG on a three-year contract whilst John Mensah has returned to Sunderland on a year-long loan. Striker Bafetimbi Gomis begins his second season at Lyon with additional pressure as Lisandro Lopez is still struggling to overcome an injury sustained in pre-season. Lyon will challenge again on the domestic front and will remain a club to watch in Europe. Whilst for the fans, their dominance of the French game may still be fresh in the memory, they will soon want new memories and Puel will know that. A Brief History
Lyon Olympique Universitaire were formed around 1899 when the football and rugby sections of the multi sports club Lyon Olympique split after a disagreement. It was nationally established as a club on August 3, 1950 winning the first major title, the Ligue 2 Championship, in 1951. Despite relegation soon afterwards, the second Ligue 2 was claimed and the following years saw French Cup victories in 1964, 1967 and 1973, beating Bordeaux, Sochaux and Nantes respectively. They finished runners up in the same tournament in 1963, 1971 and 1976.
![]() The winds of change started blowing around the Stade Gerland in 1987, when Jean-Michel Aulas took over as president. Aulas, an extremely ambitious person, wanted to make the club a force to be reckoned with in Europe. At that time, Lyon were a struggling second division club, with disinterested fans in a city that took rugby more seriously than the beautiful game. Aulas brought Raymond Domenech to the club in 1988 who promotion to the first division in 1989, and made a serious effort at building a team which could, first and foremost, survive in Ligue 1. He took the club into the 1991-1992 UEFA Cup before leaving to become coach of the France U-21 team, Aulas appointed former midfield Jean Tigana as manager. It was around this time that Olympique de Marseille were embroiled in various problems, with financial irregularities and a match fixing scandal threatening the future of the then most dominant club in France. With Marseille relegated to the second division, Lyon finished runners up behind Nantes in the 1994-95 Ligue 1 season. In the next few years, Lyon had to be content with mid table obscurity and a UEFA Cup spot. Under Bernard Lacombe, they finished third in the 1998-99 season and qualified for a Champions League spot. A French Cup win in 2001 was a signal of intent and in 2001-02, Lyon won their first domestic title with Jacques Santini at the helm of affairs, pipping Lens to the championship by two points. What followed was domination in the way Aulas could have only dreamt of. The 2002-03 and the 2003-04 seasons were extremely close with Lyon winning by one and three points respectively. In the 2004-05 season, they finished eight points clear of runners up Lille. The next season was won by a margin of fifteen points. The run of seven consecutive titles was surely more than even Aulas could have dreamt of. Watch Lyon Live
