The coming season has been overshadowed by the demise of Setanta, the broadcaster with television rights to the SPL. There were concerns some clubs could go under due to the outstanding monies owed by the firm not being paid. However, the focus has now once again thankfully turned to on-the-field activities.

It is once again expected that the Old Firm will dominate the challenge for honours during the coming season. Glasgow clubs Celtic and Rangers have shared the SPL title between them since it’s inaugural season in 1998.

Reigning champions Rangers under the guidance of Walter Smith will seek to retain their crown at the same time as making progress in the Champions League and will look to forward Kris Boyd to continue his impressive goal scoring record. There have been more exits than entrances during the summer at Ibrox but Smith’s decisions have historically proven to be good ones.

Celtic boss Tony Mowbray knows that he has a tough act to follow in Gordon Strachan. However, the former Parkhead idle who has previously managed Hibernian before guiding West Brom to the Premier League in England has all the credentials to once again bring the SPL title to the green and white side of Glasgow.

Hearts could be the closest challengers to the Glasgow pairing again this year and indeed are the only club to have broken the Old Firm’s stranglehold on the top two positions since the SPL came into being. Once again, it would appear that the rest may look to the cup competitions for their shot at glory.  

The SPL broke away from the Scottish Football League in very much a similar way to English Premier League. Established in 1998, 10 teams originally were involved but this was expanded to 12 in 2000/01.

The Scottish League Premier Division as it was before the SPL was also dominated by the Old Firm of Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic. Together they have shared more silverware than any other Scottish teams and Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup (now the Champions League) in 1967. Not since Aberdeen’s win in the 1984/5 season has the Scottish league title left Glasgow.
