2010/11

The 2009/10 season was overshadowed by the demise of Setanta, the broadcaster with television rights to the SPL. However, the concerns that Scotland could lose clubs who simply could not cope financially with the loss of the television revenue was unfounded.

The Glasgow Old Firm of Celtic and Rangers will once again fight it out for bragging rights north of the border. Walter Smith’s ‘Gers triumphed last season and the Bhoy’s poor showing cost Tony Mowbray his job with another former player, Neil Lennon, taking the reins amongst much expectation.

Smith will look for his side to progress in European competition this year as well as retaining Glasgow’s stranglehold on the SPL title. Despite the loss of record scorer Kris Boyd to Championship Middlesbrough, and the distinct lack of transfer activity in Scotland since the demise of the Setanta cash, Smith has managed to bring much-travelled striker James Beattie to Ibrox and he has the presence to trouble any defence.

Lennon has already seen his side fall between the European cracks and will seek to topple Rangers from their perch as Celtic seek to regain the glories of the not so distant past.

Dundee United saw their progress last year rewarded with third and a UEFA Cup spot with Edinburgh duo Hibernian and Hearts close behind the battle for the right to be the closest contender to the Old Firm will be tight during 2010/11.

A Brief History

The SPL broke away from the Scottish Football League in very much a similar way to English Premier League. Established in 1998, 10 teams originally were involved but this was expanded to 12 in 2000/01.

The Scottish League Premier Division as it was before the SPL was also dominated by the Old Firm of Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic. Together they have shared more silverware than any other Scottish teams and Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup (now the Champions League) in 1967. Not since Aberdeen’s win in the 1984/5 season has the Scottish league title left Glasgow.
